The late nineties and early twenties were a period of great significance for the
world as well as for the society within it. It was a period of great change and
upheaval that left permanent footprints across the world in the form of French
Revolution, Industrial Revolution, Renaissance, University Revolution and so on.
The society was changing in an unprecedented manner. People were beginning to
challenge the existing belief system based largely on religion. Reason was
replacing Religion. The society was fragmenting into pieces and people were in a
state of complete disequilibrium and frenzy. The existing social sciences were not
being able to explain the recent developments. It was at this juncture that a
holistic social science was required to understand and comprehend the situation.
Thus, Sociology was born as a distinct discipline. In totality, sociology is the study
of the various aspects of society and interactions within it to promote a better
cross-cultural, and general, understanding in order to lead to a more harmonious
society. Sociology as a discipline develops in an individual to critically question
various aspects of society as well as to facilitate interaction for the smooth
functioning of society, hence, maintaining the ratio between change and
equilibrium.
Our institution Banipur Mahila Mahavidyalaya was established in the year 1999
and the Department of Sociology has been part of the institution since then. The
Department had started its journey with a lone teacher Dr. Piyali Sur and has
travelled a long distance since its inception. The Department offers both Honors
and General courses. At present the department has one fulltime faculty and
three State Aided College Teachers.
The mission of the department is to develop its students in way so that they are
capable of discovering and exploring their role in society.
The vision of the Department is to motivate and encourage students to improve
themselves not only educationally but also socially.
